href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holga" target="_blank">Holga camera. Although we have a few other film cameras in our collection I wanted to try something a bit different. So I put it on my list and hoped that Santa would ask his elves to check out eBay for me. Well, Santa didn’t but I did receive a fantastic gift from my Dad: one of his old cameras I remember learning on them and then spending hours in our basement darkroom developing the prints. It is really one of my favourite childhood memories. So when he nonchalantly produced his Pentax Asahi MX and said that I could have it if I wanted it, I was really touched by his gift.

I started out with some colour film (Kodak 400 ISO) just to practice and to figure out the nuances of the camera. At first I found it a bit tricky to feel the f-stops on the old lens, but I quickly taught myself to just slow down and relax. After I did that everything just, ummm.. clicked I know that you have probably seen enough cat photos in the past 30 days or so, but here are a few more to add to that collection I promise it will be more interesting the next time I post some film shots as there are photos of people on the next roll to be developed.

Other than a less-than-stellar scanning job, the colours are close to what the prints show and I have not adjusted any exposures or done any sharpening. These are 99.9% SOOC (straight out of the camera).

I love this one because of the dust in the lens and the flare <img

What?

I like to cook and Nick likes to eat. That’s a pretty good deal, right? Well, this recipe that we are going to share with you has a bit of a back-story so please be patient…

My first experience with tequila involved my 25th birthday and my sister buying me a shot. While I appreciated the gesture, I discovered what bad tequila tastes like. Fast-forward to 2008 when Nick & I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary in Mexico. We went into a tequila store in Playa del Carmen and were awestruck! This store had HUNDREDS of different kinds of tequila available for purchase. Although we walked out empty handed, we did leave with intrigue. Before our flight home, we hit up the duty free and decided to get a bottle of tequila (because that’s what people do when they go to Mexico). We had no knowledge of “good brands” or what to look for when choosing a bottle. We just sort of blindly chose one. I think we picked it because the bottle looked nice or something…

Anyways, this blind-decision turned out to be a delicious second experience with tequila We bought books on tequila recipes and really enjoyed testing them out Now here’s where the cooking portion comes into play. I just made up this chicken recipe one night; straight out of my head and on to the plate! Sometimes I do that and it doesn’t turn out and sometimes it’s miraculous! This Tequila-Lime Chicken is not only miraculous, but extremely delicious so I’ll stop blabbering and tell you how to make it

First, get some tequila. It doesn’t have to be this kind (although I highly recommend it), just get your favourite stuff that is 100% Agave – not the mixto kind. Trust me on this.

Then smash some cloves of garlic and coriander seeds. Coriander seeds have this lovely and delicious warm smell to them Then juice a lime, pour a shot of tequila, a hearty splash of good olive oil into a dish and add at least a heaping quarter teaspoon of salt. Chop up half of a jalapeno (your choice on whether you want to seed it), a small handful of cilantro and throw that all in together.

Mix these ingredients all up and add in your chicken. Marinate for at least 30 minutes and up to 8 hours. You can then throw the chicken on the barbeque, or start it in the frying pan and finish it in the oven like I do. You will notice that I don’t really give exact amounts of ingredients and that’s because I can never remember how much I’ve used before – plus, cooking is personal and it should be to taste. Once you make it yourself you will figure out what you need more of or less of, etc.
<div

Come inside to check out exactly where we're going!

Exciting news! Deb and I are going to New York City for her 30th birthday in the spring! You know, every time I hear the name “New York City” I immediately think of the Pace Picante sauce commercials. You know the ones… there’s a bunch of cowboys sitting around a fire and they read the label of the “other guy’s” salsa and they say “This stuff’s made in New York City! NEW YORK CITY?!?!!” Ya… that one.

Anyway, we’re looking forward to it. I’ve been to New York once before, but I was only 11 and obviously didn’t have the freedom to do whatever I wanted (though I still had a ton of fun!) We’re still working on the plans with regards to what we are going to do, but definitely we’ll be taking in a Yankees game. I went to a game when I was there in ’91 when the original Yankee Stadium was still around, so it’ll be cool to see a game in the new Yankee Stadium.

Another place we’ll be going… the B&H store. B&H is the largest retailer of photography gear in the US. They have one store, and it’s in NY. Watch this little video to see what we’ll be in for:

Of course, we’ll be taking plenty of photos too! How could we not? I plan on taking lots of night shots of the city, So look out for those sometime late in the spring <img

Leave us a comment below!

PS. Since we started planning this trip, I’ve had Sinatra’s New York, New York stuck in my head… except It’s the version from Gremlins 2.

<div
